The majority of these masks are carved from a jungle wood called parota,it is one of the few woods that is impervious to insects. Once the mask is carved a thin layer of bees wax and pine pitch mixture is thinly spread over the surface and the Huichol artist painstakingly applies one bead at a time, and without the aid of a pattern creates these beautiful designs. Each one is unique unto its self.
